Everything Rearward of the Baggage Compartment/ Sub-Kit 1 of 6
Tailcone4/4/2018 Hope everyone had a Happy Easter weekend! Last thing I had to finish up on the stabilator involved the rear bulkhead of the tailcone. The bulkhead had to be fit to the stabilator to determine the correct diameter washers to use to minimize lateral play in the bulkhead. What a freakin nightmare! Its already a crammed space and trying to determine what four washers need to be placed on both sides of each bulkhead bearing is super tedious. After fighting with glue, tape and a few choice words I finally was able to determine that on the right side I will need two standard 914 washers (one on each side of the bearing) and on the left will need one standard 914 washer on the inboard side. I verified what I got by busting out the micrometer and after a few measurements and some quick math confirmed that those are the only combinations that will work. After that I was able to move the stabilator upstairs and out of the way to prepare for the tailcone. I did a quick fit check of the AST's on the stabilator and the fit is super tight and the hinge holes don't line up all the way down. Something I will have to play with later and maybe give a shout out to Vans. If any other builders on here have any ideas please comment. I went to harbor freight and picked up couple saw horses for the start of the tailcone assembly over the weekend. Today I started putting them to work by riveting the stiffeners to the skins. Which btw a reminder again for anyone with a pneumatic squeezer like I have, please ensure before squeezing that the squeezer wont catch the flange like I did, again. I posted a bigger pic for all you squeezer folks out there. Actually all the bottom skins of the tailcone went together fairly easy. the 1281 side skins were a bit of hassle to line up and clecko to the tailcone ribs but a rivet in each hole eventually brought em all together. Got the bottom all riveted up where specified and now some lunch and get caught up on some work. Laterz
